The Chartered Insurance Institute has launched Voices, an online research community designed to give insurance and personal finance professionals a stronger role in shaping policy, professional standards and membership services.

The community is intended to let practitioners share real-world insight, helping ensure the Institute's engagement with policymakers, regulators and other stakeholders is grounded in the experience of a broad pool of professionals working across the sector. Voices will also support the CII Group's development of standards, learning, products and member services, and is open to both CII members and non-members.

How the community will work

Participants will be invited to take part in short surveys and pulse polls, moderated discussions, topic deep-dives, focus groups and interviews. Involvement is voluntary, with participants free to choose which activities suit their interests, experience and availability. In return, Voices members receive early access to findings before publication, a quarterly digest summarising what the community has said, and a personal record of their own participation to track the research they've contributed to.

Active participants will also have opportunities to submit ideas and articles for The Journal and Personal Finance Professional, and may be invited to thought leadership roundtables and panel discussions. Those who take part regularly are entered into a monthly prize draw for a £50 voucher, or the option of a charitable donation instead.

Matthew Hill, group chief executive of CII, said Voices gives insurance and personal finance professionals a place to share their experience with the wider profession and inform the CII's research, advocacy and engagement with decision-makers. He said brining together the perspectives of hundreds of practitioners allows the Institute to better represent the profession on the issues that matter most to the sector.

Hill joined the CII as group chief executive in April 2024 from the Legal Services Board, where he had served as chief executive since 2019, having earlier held senior regulatory roles at the General Dental Council and the Gambling Commission across a two-decade career largely spent in UK regulatory and civil service positions before moving into insurance sector leadership.

The wider read

Voices sits within a broader trend of professional bodies trying to convert member goodwill into structured, ongoing research input rather than relying solely on periodic surveys or consultation responses when a specific policy question arises.

Opening the community to non-members as well as CII members is a notable choice, since it means the Institute is explicitly trying to capture practitioner perspective beyond its existing membership base, potentially reaching professionals who haven't yet joined the CII but whose day-to-day experience could still usefully inform its advocacy work.

Whether the incentives on offer, early access to findings, a quarterly digest and a modest prize draw, are enough to sustain meaningful, regular participation over time will likely determine whether Voices becomes a genuine ongoing input into CII policy positions or a one-off engagement exercise that fades once the initial launch interest wears off.
