This week's London market appointments span carrier distribution, political violence underwriting, Lloyd's syndicate leadership, wholesale property broking and insurance-focused investment banking.

The Hartford appoints international head of distribution

The Hartford has appointed Jonathan Smith (pictured, left) as international head of distribution, based in the UK. He will lead the insurer's international distribution strategy, broker engagement and market development, working with underwriting teams across the London and international markets.

Smith reports to Tom Allebone-Webb, head of strategy and execution for global specialty international.

Smith joins from Aspen Insurance Group, where he spent 10 years and was most recently international head of distribution and innovation leader. He previously spent a decade in broking at Willis Towers Watson and JLT.

A distribution head who has spent ten years on the broking side signals that The Hartford wants to deepen broker relationships in London. Brokers should expect more structured engagement on its international specialty appetite.

Insurance Advisory Partners appoints co-heads of UK and Europe

Insurance-focused investment bank Insurance Advisory Partners (IAP) has appointed partners Rinki Melwani (pictured, centre) and Benjamin James as co-heads of UK and Europe. They will report to founder and chief executive Tony Ursano.

Melwani previously worked at J.P. Morgan, Citi, Credit Suisse and Jefferies. James's background includes Fenchurch Advisory Partners, Financial Services Capital and Deloitte.

Broker owners weighing a sale or capital raise have another specialist adviser with dedicated UK leadership, as the market braces for a possible pre-Budget rush of deals.

Consilium names partner

Independent wholesale broker Consilium has appointed Rory Hardingham (pictured, right) as a partner in its international property risk solutions team, led by senior partner Paul Hargis.

Hardingham joins from Willis Towers Watson, where he was lead associate for five years, and has more than a decade of underwriting and broking experience in international property.

The team places primary, buffer and excess layers, and covers sectors including mining, power, infrastructure and manufacturing, as well as aluminium composite material (ACM) cladding. Its target territories include Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean, Europe and the Gulf.

Hargis said Hardingham brought an excellent combination of underwriting insight and broking experience.

Consilium positions itself as one of a dwindling number of independent wholesalers. For retail brokers with hard-to-place international property, including cladding exposures, another senior placer adds capacity at a time when wholesale consolidation is narrowing choice.

Crux Underwriting appoints two executives

Multi-line specialty managing general agent (MGA) Crux Underwriting has appointed co-founder Mike O'Connor as chief commercial officer, broadening his remit from chief underwriting officer. He will lead commercial strategy, distribution, broker relationships and growth initiatives.

Natalie Gregory joins as chief executive of political violence and terrorism. She spent more than two decades at AXA XL in underwriting and leadership roles, most recently as underwriting manager in the political violence and terrorism market.

Crux launched in 2024 as a terrorism MGA, with a $100 million line led by Chaucer. It has since expanded into other lines. Its founders came from Ascot Underwriting.

Gregory said she was attracted by the chance to join a business combining underwriting expertise with modern technology, and to help bring new sources of business to the London market.

A dedicated political violence chief executive with long carrier experience strengthens Crux's lead offering. Brokers placing terrorism and political violence risks gain a senior technical contact at a time when demand for the cover remains elevated.

Santam Syndicate 1918 names active underwriter

Santam Syndicate 1918 has made chief executive Sam Geddes its active underwriter, alongside his existing role. He reports to Gareth Beaver, chief executive of Santam Specialist Solutions. The syndicate is part of Santam Group, which describes itself as Africa's largest non-life insurer.

Sam Tierney and Brie Suthagaran have been promoted from assistant underwriter to underwriter in the property direct and facultative (D&F) team, reporting to head of property Nigel Tatlock.

"The progress we have made over the past year has been exceptional," said Geddes.

Combining the chief executive and active underwriter roles concentrates underwriting authority at the top of a growing syndicate. Brokers placing property D&F business gain a clearer line to decision-makers.
