RSA, part of Intact Financial Corporation, has appointed Emily Coupland as general counsel for its UK and European operations, subject to regulatory approval.

Coupland is expected to take up the role later this year and will join the operating committee. She will be responsible for overseeing the legal and compliance functions across RSA’s businesses in the region.

The appointment comes as RSA prepares to rebrand as Intact Insurance in late 2025, following its acquisition by Canada-based Intact in 2021. The rebrand will unify RSA, NIG and FarmWeb under a single operating model and identity. The legal and compliance function is expected to play a key role in managing regulatory requirements, internal governance and contractual adjustments related to the transition.

Coupland joins RSA from AXA, where she served as general counsel for the UK and Ireland. She brings over 30 years of experience in financial services, covering transactional work, regulatory matters and corporate governance. Her appointment fills a key legal leadership role as RSA moves to align its UK and European operations more closely with Intact’s global framework.

According to Ken Norgrove, CEO of RSA UK and Ireland, Coupland’s commercial and legal expertise positions her well to lead the legal and compliance function at a time of significant organisational change.

Nadia Côté, CEO of RSA Europe and head of specialty lines UK, said Coupland’s experience will support RSA’s ongoing business growth across the UK and Europe, while providing oversight during the upcoming brand and operational changes.

RSA has reported strong financial results under Intact ownership, with pre-tax operating profit for RSA UK and Ireland rising to CA$301 million (£172 million) in 2024. The company continues to insure a wide range of clients, including major UK corporates and small and medium-sized enterprises.

As RSA continues its integration into Intact, Coupland will be responsible for ensuring legal and regulatory compliance across jurisdictions, supporting internal governance, and contributing to the legal aspects of the group’s strategic transition.
