The global reinsurance business of Lloyd’s insurer Sompo Canopius has appointed a new leader for its operations in continental Europe.

Thierry Pelgrin will take up the role at Sompo Canopius Re on November 1, reporting to chief underwriting officer Jamie Wakeling.

Pelgrin will develop Sompo Canopius Re’s existing property, casualty and marine treaty reinsurance capabilities in continental Europe.

He will lead the reinsurance firm’s underwriting team in Zurich and will work closely with the London team.

“We are taking a clear eyed view of the development of our reinsurance business and strategy, building a reliable and resilient position to ensure that we are here for our brokers and clients in the long term,” said CEO Markus Eugster.

“Thierry’s broad experience, which complements our existing skills, will be a great asset as we further strengthen our position in Europe,” he added.

Pelgrin joins from Everest Re and brings more than 20 years of international experience in re/insurance.

At Everest Re’s Zurich office, Pelgrin served as director and member of the strategic committee for new business development.
