XL Catlin introduces new heads for global excess casualty division

XL Catlin has appointed two executives to leadership roles within its global excess casualty division.

Donnacha Smyth was named president of global excess casualty insurance, while Carla Greaves has been tapped to serve as chief underwriting officer of the division.

Smyth’s role as president comes into effect September 03, a release said. As president, he will lead all of XL Catlin’s global excess casualty teams, including North America, Dublin, and Bermuda. He will be based in Dublin.

Smyth is not new to XL Catlin – from 2007 to 2016, he served as chief excess casualty officer for the company. Most recently, he led Aspen Insurance’s international excess casualty group.

“Donnacha’s broad experience in this space, as well as his in-depth knowledge of our organisation, will be a fantastic asset to the ongoing growth of our business and the strengthening of our existing relationships with clients and brokers. We are delighted to welcome him back to XL Catlin,” said XL Catlin chief executive of North America insurance Joe Tocco.

Prior to her promotion, Greaves was the leader of excess casualty underwriting for XL Catlin in Bermuda. In her new role as chief underwriting officer for the global excess casualty practice, she will lead excess casualty underwriters on a worldwide basis. She will continue to be based in Bermuda.

“I am excited to see Carla step into this new leadership role; she is known in the market for her expert underwriting skills and for helping solve very complex risk management challenges for our clients and brokers,” Tocco commented on her promotion.
