The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), which has been closely monitoring firms’ handling of business interruption (BI) claims since it began collecting data in March 2021, has published the latest numbers obtained as of March 6, 2023.

Here are the claims figures from insurers affected by the BI insurance test case in the UK:

Below are the key sums, based on the information reported to the FCA.

  • 341 – the number of BI claims where the insurer’s decision as to whether they’re valid is pending
  • 1,074 – the number of unsettled claims where interim/initial payments have been made
  • £294,949,957 – the aggregate value of the interim/initial payments made for unsettled claims
  • 36,904 – the number of claims where final settlements have been agreed and paid
  • £1,406,662,310 – the aggregate value of the payments made for claims with final settlements

“In March 2023 insurers submitted what we expect to be the final iteration of data that will be collected and published on the progress of on-damage BI claims,” said the regulator.
