History of Vertafore

The company began as a punch-card data service for independent insurance agents, long before it carried the Vertafore name. It changed hands several times over the following decades. Each change brought new products and a larger customer base. Some of its key milestones include:

  • 1969: Agency Records Control begins operating in College Station, entering insurance data onto punch cards for independent agents
  • 2004: the parent company, then called AMS Holding Group, renames itself Vertafore Inc.
  • 2004: Hellman & Friedman and JMI Equity acquire a controlling stake in the newly renamed company
  • 2005: the firm relocates its headquarters to Bothell, Washington
  • 2010: TPG Capital acquires the business for approximately $1.4 billion
  • 2016: Bain Capital Private Equity and Vista Equity Partners acquire the company from TPG Capital for approximately $2.7 billion
  • 2017: the firm moves its headquarters from Bothell to Denver
  • 2020: Roper Technologies acquires Vertafore in an all-cash deal worth approximately $5.35 billion
  • 2021: the company adds AgencyZoom, a sales and marketing automation platform built for insurance agencies
  • 2022: Roper folds MGA Systems into the business, a deal that adds policy administration tools for managing general agents
  • 2026: Vertafore rolls out ReferenceConnect AI and its Velocity AI platform to bring AI tools into its core insurance systems

That string of ownership changes never touched the firm’s core focus. Each new parent company invested further in the same niche: software that keeps agencies, carriers, and MGAs connected.

Products and services

The company groups its offerings around the different players in the insurance distribution channel. Its core categories include:

  • agency management systems, including AMS360, Sagitta, and QQCatalyst
  • licensing and regulatory compliance tools under the Sircon brand, used by agencies, carriers, and state regulators
  • rating and quoting software, such as PL Rating and Commercial Submissions
  • data and analytics products, including the RiskMatch platform
  • MGA-specific systems, such as AIM and Surefyre, for policy administration and underwriting workflows
  • document and content management through ImageRight

Agencies, carriers, and MGAs typically use a mix of these systems rather than a single product. The firm designs them to work together across the policy lifecycle.

Awards and recognition

Insurance Business has named Vertafore one of its Global 5-Star Technology and Software Providers three years running. It first made the list in 2024’s 5-Star Technology Providers report and returned in 2025’s technology providers edition. It appeared again in 2026’s Global 5-Star report.

The chief product officer describes the company’s aim as connecting AI tools into one workflow. The goal is to avoid adding another disconnected tool.

Vertafore’s place in the insurance technology market

The firm competes in the agency management and distribution software space, a niche it has held since the 1970s. Ownership has changed hands more than once. The business model has stayed the same, and it’s to connect every point in the distribution chain, not just one link.

Under Roper Technologies, the company has continued to grow through acquisitions and product investment. Its most recent push brings artificial intelligence into agency and carrier systems. The firm says its long-term focus is cutting friction across submissions, quoting, servicing, and compliance work.
