The Swedish Club has officially opened its New York office, its first in the US, as a permanent base to support members and brokers across the Americas, with a claims and loss prevention presence alongside its marine insurance products. The announcement does not give staffing numbers or say whether underwriting is conducted from the office.

Members, brokers and maritime industry stakeholders joined the Club at an opening event at Lightbox in Manhattan on October 13. The office is at 140 Broadway in the Financial District and is led by Ian Duthie, regional executive director, Americas, who joined from Britannia P&I Club, where he was commercial director Americas, when the Club announced the office in December 2025.

The Club says the operation brings its expertise across hull and machinery, P&I, charterers' liability, energy and offshore, war, loss of hire and builder's risks, while establishing a claims and loss prevention presence in New York.

The Club cites a changing risk environment for shipowners, with geopolitical volatility, shifting trading patterns and inflationary pressure across their operations, including insurance and claims. On war risk, brokers told the Financial Times earlier this month that additional war risk premiums for tankers in the Gulf now run at 6% to 10% of hull value, against about 0.25% before the war, IB US reported.

Thomas Nordberg, CEO of The Swedish Club, said: "Being on the ground means we can be closer to our members and brokers." Duthie said it is important to have "a knowledgeable and closely connected local office in this time zone," and that the presence will strengthen the Club's ability to respond to members' needs and drive more efficient claims management.

For US brokers, the practical change is a claims team in their own time zone.
