Allianz Commercial has announced plans to establish a direct underwriting syndicate at Lloyd’s, with trading expected to begin on January 1, 2027, subject to final regulatory approval. Lloyd’s has already granted approval in principle.
The syndicate, named Allianz Commercial 1893, takes its number from the year Allianz opened its first international office in London. The syndicate will give Allianz Commercial access to specialty, facilities and selected managing general agent (MGA) business at Lloyd’s that it cannot reach through its existing company market channels.
Allianz already has a foothold at Lloyd’s through Syndicate 1890, the reinsurance vehicle launched in January 2026 through a partnership with investment manager Oaktree Capital Management. That syndicate is funded by Oaktree and writes a share of Allianz’s outward reinsurance programme. It is a capital structure, rather than a direct underwriting operation.
Syndicate 1893 is different in kind. Allianz Commercial will be the underwriter, writing risk on its own account through Lloyd’s market infrastructure.
The practical implication is a broader set of risks and distribution channels becoming accessible to Allianz Commercial as a Lloyd’s participant. Lloyd’s facilities allow a lead underwriter to set terms that following markets can adopt. MGA arrangements give a managing agent binding authority to write risks on behalf of a carrier. Both are channels through which a significant volume of specialty business moves. Neither is straightforwardly available to a carrier operating solely through the company market.
As Thomas Lillelund, chief executive of Allianz Commercial, said, the syndicate “will establish a long-term direct underwriting presence for Allianz Commercial in one of the world’s leading specialty markets.”
Brokers placing specialty and complex risk at Lloyd’s will have access to Allianz Commercial as a potential market participant from January, adding a well-capitalised carrier to the pool of capacity available across the lines the syndicate targets.
In August 2026, Allianz Commercial appointed Emma Woolley as president of global specialty and UK region, a newly created role that combined oversight of the insurer’s worldwide specialty lines with its UK commercial operations under a single leader. Woolley is joining from Talbot Underwriting, AIG’s Lloyd’s specialty platform, where she currently serves as chief executive, and will take up the role no later than February 2027. The sequence is deliberate: a specialist Lloyd’s platform leader hired months before a Lloyd’s syndicate is announced.
The two moves together point to a dedicated specialty leadership structure, with the Lloyd’s syndicate as its market vehicle.
Allianz is not alone in seeing Lloyd’s as the right route for specialty expansion. HDI Global UK & Ireland received approval in principle to establish its own syndicate in September 2026, as part of its Xcelerate29 growth strategy. Two of Europe’s largest commercial insurers have now moved to build direct Lloyd’s platforms within months of each other, both framing the market’s global licences and specialty distribution infrastructure as central to their growth plans.
Dawn Miller, Lloyd’s chief commercial officer and chief executive of Lloyd’s Americas, described the Allianz announcement as reflecting the market’s “unique advantages in servicing multinational, specialty, and complex risks at scale.”
Allianz Commercial generated approximately €17.3 billion in gross premium globally in 2025, according to the company’s own figures. No capacity target has been disclosed for Syndicate 1893.
