Michael “Mike” van der Straaten, chief executive officer of Antares Global, has died unexpectedly following a short illness, the company announced.
Van der Straaten passed away over the weekend, according to a statement issued by Antares. No further details about his illness or the circumstances of his death were disclosed.
“Antares and QIC’s thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences are with Mike’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” the statement said.
Antares added that a further statement would be released in due course.
Van der Straaten was a highly experienced insurance executive with more than 40 years in the industry, having begun his career in 1984. He served as CEO of Antares Global, the London-based specialty insurance and reinsurance business operating across the Lloyd’s and international markets.
Antares forms part of Qatar Insurance Group and has underwriting operations in London and Bermuda. Under van der Straaten’s leadership, the business underwent a major restructuring, consolidating its activities into retail and commercial divisions while retaining its dual-location underwriting platform.
Before leading Antares, van der Straaten served as chief executive of Qatar Re. He later took charge of QIC Global, which subsequently rebranded as Antares Global.
Throughout his tenure, he was a prominent advocate of underwriting discipline and operational efficiency. In market commentary, he regularly highlighted the importance of careful risk selection and strong execution, particularly as insurers and reinsurers faced softer pricing and increased competition.
His unexpected death leaves Antares facing an immediate leadership transition. The company has not yet announced an interim chief executive, succession arrangements or any changes to its senior management structure.
Insurance Business extends its condolences to van der Straaten’s family, friends, colleagues and loved ones.
