The Association of British Insurers (ABI) Board has selected Aviva UK Life CEO Andy Briggs as the new chairman of the trade union later this year.

Briggs, who is also the chairman of Aviva Global Life, will officially take up the role after the ABI’s annual general meeting in October.

He will succeed Paul Evans, AXA UK group chief executive, who has completed his two-year term as ABI chairman.

His deputy will be Direct Line Group CEO Paul Geddes, who is the current ABI Board senior independent director.

Briggs said he is “delighted” to lead the organisation.

“The ABI plays an important role working closely with government, regulators and others to ensure that the industry promotes best practice, transparency and great value for customers,” Briggs said.

“I believe that as an industry our unwavering focus should be to help customers think both about savings, so that they can enjoy a secure and prosperous retirement, and also to protect their families, businesses and belongings when the unexpected happens,” he added.

Briggs will work with ABI Director General Huw Evans and his team to “continue the important work of this industry in overcoming the challenges we face and focusing on the role insurance plays in our society and everyday life."

Briggs has been deputy ABI chairman since November 2015 and currently serves as ABI audit committee chairman.

He joined the Aviva PLC Board and Group Executive in April 2015 to lead the insurer’s enlarged UK life business

Briggs also served in the past as CEO of Scottish Widows, Lloyds Banking Group general insurance, and Prudential Group’s retirement income business.
