German insurtech firm Feather has launched a new business insurance product aimed at international companies with expat employees across Europe. The digital-first service extends the startup’s reach beyond individual coverage to cross-border workforces.
Feather, which initially gained traction by digitising insurance access for expats in Germany, France, and Spain, is now targeting human resource departments with a platform that covers employee health, life, and pension insurance. It also includes professional liability, general liability, and cybersecurity insurance.
“Businesses in Europe, especially small and mid-sized ones, often struggle to offer substantial insurance benefits,” said Rob Schumacher, CEO and co-founder of Feather. “Their traditional insurance partners aren’t built to support them, especially in pension insurance, where too often international employees miss out on thousands of euros, locked into high-fee products.”
Feather’s business model seeks to address inefficiencies in Europe’s commercial insurance market, it said. The company positions its service as particularly valuable for firms where expats constitute at least 10% of the workforce.
“Feather is a no-brainer for companies where expats make up at least 10% of the workforce,” Schumacher added. “HR leaders can turn international onboarding into a warm welcome instead of a bureaucratic nightmare.”
Leading the business rollout is Nicolai Schieffer (pictured), Feather’s head of B2B, who is responsible for building relationships with HR teams and expanding the company’s presence among European employers. “Feather’s business launch is about solving relocation pain points upstream – at the employer level, where most insurance decisions are initiated,” he said.
Beyond employee coverage, the new offering includes cyber insurance, a growing concern among companies affected by the EU’s updated NIS-2 directive.
The launch follows Feather’s 2024 funding round of $6 million and the appointment of new leadership in France and Spain to accelerate regional operations. The firm, based in Berlin, continues to expand its footprint across Europe.
