There is a new specialist group at the Forum of Insurance Lawyers (FOIL).

It has launched a sports law sector focus team which will facilitate training and events looking at issues arising from COVID-19 and beyond. It will demonstrate expertise to non-members and possible clients and act as thought leaders, while also looking to improve the understanding of risks.

“We are fortunate within FOIL to count among our members many of the major players in this field,” said FOIL CEO Laurence Besemer. “The opportunities a sector focus team provides in improving communication and sharing experience will be invaluable.”

The group has already established an agenda for the coming months – it will include a debate about halting the Premier League with 92 games still to be played. It will also delve into how those responsible for amateur sport can operate amid the current uncertainty.

“Insurers are heavily involved in the area of sports law, on issues ranging from safeguarding and injuries in amateur sport, through to the headline issues arising in professional sport,” said Anthony Baker, president of FOIL. “It makes good sense for a FOIL SFT to focus on this area, with COVID-19 restrictions already putting group activities in the spotlight – a situation likely to continue for some time.”
