Thanks to a 2016 internal audit at what used to be known as Arthur J Gallaghernow simply called Gallagher following a rebrand – a claims manager who was siphoning money off the insurer has been caught.

James Cunnington, who pleaded guilty to one charge of fraud by abuse of position, used the embezzled funds for his wedding, as well as for holidays and debt payments, according to the Evening Standard. The man, who said he wanted to provide his family a better life, kept the scam a secret from his bride.

According to the report, the theft went on from 2011 until last year, with Cunnington faking insurance payouts to his benefit while supposedly being responsible for validating claims in Birmingham. Over a hundred suspicious insurance claims were discovered during the internal audit.

“The extent of the fraud claims is in excess of £500,000,” noted prosecutor Shekinah Anson, as quoted by the report.

The 37-year-old, who is facing imprisonment, initially claimed his extra money was from commission-based bonuses and a result of hard work.
