The man at the centre of a criminal gang involved in insurance fraud and human trafficking will be locked up in jail for at least a decade.

Crash-for-cash scammer Rameo Mohammed, previously known as Mohammed Sangak, received a two-year prison sentence earlier this week after he was found guilty of conspiracy to defraud, the Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB) said.

Mohammed staged accidents in and around the Medway area of Kent starting from 2011. Authorities raided his address and seized a significant amount of evidence, including insurance and identification documents and hand-drawn maps of supposed collisions that were used to make the fraudulent claims.

Mohammed was also handed an eight-year prison sentence for his involvement in human trafficking, which was uncovered in another police investigation. According to the IFB, he used the identities of those he smuggled into the UK to validate his claims fraud with insurers.

Further probes found that the claims were being managed through an organisation set up by Mohammed to facilitate the fraud. Through this company, additional fees were being added on top of the claim pay-outs he was receiving.

The IFB was able to connect Mohammed’s group to over 315 claims for personal injury. Twenty insurers were exposed to the criminal activities.

“It’s clear that Mohammed was at the heart of a very sophisticated criminal gang that had little regard for the safety and wellbeing of others,” said IFB director Ben Fletcher.

“We know that crash for cash fraudsters pose a significant risk to society and we see all too often that they are involved with other wider and more serious criminality,” Fletcher added. “They are fuelled by greed and try to exploit every opportunity regardless of the impact it has.”
