Markel Insurance has introduced a Domestic Abuse Support Framework for its UK operations. The initiative is designed to provide structured support for employees affected by domestic abuse, with an emphasis on privacy, safety, and access to resources.

The framework sets out procedures for confidential support, with trained colleagues available to assist those impacted. It also details how disclosures are managed in accordance with data protection policies and outlines a case-by-case approach for attendance and paid leave.

Employees can access financial support and counselling through Markel’s existing benefits, and additional help is available via local organisations such as Women’s Aid. The framework also addresses workplace security and the use of the Bright Sky app, as well as guidance for line managers.

Markel has established partnerships with the Employers’ Initiative on Domestic Abuse (EIDA), Women’s Aid, and We Thrive. As a Strategic Partner of EIDA, Markel said that it will draw on best practices from EIDA’s network of over 2,000 members and survivors.

Jo Browning (pictured above), chief people officer at Markel International, said, “With the prevalence of domestic abuse remaining at an alarming level, we’re acutely aware of the role that employers can play in supporting employees who have been impacted. Domestic abuse doesn’t stop at the front door, and neither does our duty of care, so I’m delighted to be rolling out this framework to best support our employees, while raising vital awareness.”

Browning also highlighted that the partnerships with EIDA, We Thrive, and Women’s Aid have been instrumental in shaping the framework and will continue to provide expertise and solutions for employees.

Outside of its UK initiatives, Markel Insurance has also recently expanded its operations in Canada, launching three new products aimed at technology-driven businesses. The insurer introduced Cyber 360 Canada, Tech 360 Canada, and Fintech 360 Canada, each designed to address the increasing complexity of cyber and technology risks.

These offerings provide standalone and bundled solutions for cyber, management liability, and fintech-specific exposures, reflecting a broader trend in the market as clients seek comprehensive protection and risk management support.
