International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) president Richard Turner is stepping down on September 21 after completing his four-year term, and IUMI’s nominating committee has put forward GAREX’s Frédéric Denèfle as candidate for the post.

Denèfle, who has 34 years of insurance industry experience, has served on the IUMI executive committee since 2018. The Allianz alumnus became managing director of marine war insurance underwriting in Paris at GAREX (Groupement d’Assurance de Risques EXceptionnels) in 2013.

Meanwhile, IUMI executive committee vice chair and Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance marine underwriting general manager Kosuke Hashimoto has been nominated for the newly created role of vice president.

The candidates will be considered by IUMI’s Council at two meetings next month, with a formal announcement to be made following the voting.

Turner, former chief executive of RSA Luxembourg, is currently the international head of marine at managing general underwriter Victor Insurance. He was elected president of IUMI in 2018 after serving on the executive committee from 2011 to 2015.
