SEA-LNG has announced that the UK P&I Club has joined its expanding membership, bolstering the organisation's technical and insurance expertise across the global maritime sector.

Founded in 1869, the UK P&I Club is one of the world's oldest and largest mutual marine insurers, providing protection and indemnity coverage to shipowners, operators and charterers around the world.

By joining SEA-LNG, UK P&I Club said that it aims to reinforce rigorous safety frameworks, disciplined risk assessment and controlled operational implementation as LNG adoption scales up in shipping. This complements SEA-LNG's mission to accelerate the adoption of low-emission fuels while maintaining operational and safety standards across the industry.

LNG adoption is increasingly viewed as a practical pathway toward reducing emissions in shipping today, while creating a bridge toward net-zero fuels.

Insurance as a tool to mitigate LNG operational and regulatory risk

The involvement of P&I insurers like the UK Club is crucial in managing the operational and regulatory risks associated with LNG. LNG carriers face complex hazards such as cryogenic burns, flammable vapor release, and fuel system malfunctions. Meanwhile, P&I insurance provides a financial safety net for incidents, helping shipowners cover potential liability costs while ensuring compliance with international regulations.

Insurers also actively support risk prevention. The UK P&I Club offers tailored safety & risk management programs, audits, and crew training designed to reduce accidents and operational downtime. Through SEA-LNG, UK P&I Club extends these capabilities to emerging LNG adopters, ensuring safe integration of new fuel technologies and adherence to environmental regulations.

The addition of the UK P&I Club to SEA-LNG also marks an important step in strengthening cross-sector collaboration. Insurers play a pivotal role in enabling the energy transition by providing the confidence and frameworks shipowners need to invest, demonstrating that the operationally proven and safe methane pathway is a practical and realistic solution.

The UK P&I Club has been supporting members using LNG as a marine fuel for over 50 years, prioritizing safe, controlled, and well-managed implementation.
