History of Ameritas

Five community leaders in Lincoln started the business in 1887 to fill a gap: the city had no local life insurer at the time. They called it The Old Line Bankers Life Insurance Company of Nebraska.

The insurer grew steadily through the twentieth century, then began adopting the Ameritas name and expanding through mergers in the years that followed. Key milestones include:

  • 1887: five Lincoln businessmen form The Old Line Bankers Life Insurance Company of Nebraska
  • 1988: the insurer renames itself Ameritas Life Insurance Corp. and adopts the bison as its logo
  • 1999: Ameritas Mutual Insurance Holding Company merges with Acacia Mutual Holding Corporation, forming Ameritas Acacia Mutual Holding Company
  • 2006: the group merges with Union Central Mutual Holding Company, forming UNIFI Mutual Holding Company
  • 2012: UNIFI adopts the Ameritas Mutual Holding Company name and the “fulfilling life” tagline
  • 2014: Union Central Life and Acacia Life merge into Ameritas Life
  • 2021: the insurer acquires BlueStar Retirement Services, adding recordkeeping and third-party administration for retirement plans

That string of mergers turned a regional Nebraska insurer into a national mutual holding company built around several once-independent brands. The BlueStar deal, its most recent major acquisition, extended the group’s retirement plans business beyond its own products into third-party administration.

What does the company offer?

The insurer organizes its offerings around a few core areas rather than a single product line. Its lineup includes:

  • life insurance for individuals and families
  • annuities and investment products for retirement savings
  • individual disability income insurance
  • dental, vision, and hearing care benefits for employers and individuals
  • retirement plan recordkeeping and administration for businesses
  • executive benefits and succession planning for business owners

Dental and vision coverage has become one of the firm’s most recognized business lines outside its original life insurance base, alongside a growing annuities and retirement plans division.

The insurer’s market position

As a mutual organization, the firm answers to its policyholders instead of public shareholders, a structure the company says lets it prioritize long-term stability over short-term earnings. That approach has supported steady, organic growth alongside selective acquisitions like the BlueStar deal.

Culture and values

The mutual insurer describes its purpose as “fulfilling life,” a phrase it adopted in 2012 alongside a modernized bison logo. Ameritas says its culture rests on a short list of core values:

  • integrity
  • mutuality
  • performance
  • putting people first
  • continuous learning
  • generosity

Those values, the firm says, guide decisions that put customers ahead of short-term financial targets. Since its founding in Nebraska more than a century ago, that mutual-first approach has remained a constant thread even as the company’s product lines and geographic reach expanded well beyond its original Midwest base.
