Ameritas has named Bob MacDonald (pictured, right) as senior vice president of strategic planning and Gaurav Mehra (pictured, left) as senior vice president of marketing, with both appointments now in effect. The two roles reflect different but connected commercial pressures: MacDonald's strategic planning remit sits at the intersection of capital allocation and long-term growth planning at a moment when both Ameritas' annuity performance and its dental segment face specific forward-looking questions, while Mehra's AI-enabled marketing brief arrives as the broader life and annuity industry accelerates AI investment across distribution and operations.
Ameritas flagged pressure in its dental segment tied to the potential expiration of Affordable Care Act premium tax credits. The Peterson-KFF Health System Tracker has estimated that expiration could push marketplace premiums up by more than 75% for many enrollees if Congress does not act - a dynamic that would shift more individuals toward employer and voluntary dental plans, which is precisely the channel Ameritas serves through its dental and vision business. For a strategic planning function spanning enterprise growth initiatives and capital allocation priorities, a marketplace-driven shift toward employer dental is a specific forward opportunity embedded in the same regulatory uncertainty that creates the near-term pressure.
The annuity context is equally specific. LIMRA reported 2025 US annuity sales reached a record $464.1 billion, the fourth consecutive record year, though Q1 2026 preliminary sales of $104.6 billion ran approximately 2% below the same period's record a year earlier. Ameritas highlighted particularly strong 2024 annuity performance. MacDonald will continue leading the strategic planning function he has overseen since joining the mutual insurer, spanning enterprise strategic planning, competitive intelligence, portfolio management and long-term growth initiatives. Sue Wilkinson, president and COO at Ameritas, said MacDonald had played a key role in shaping the company's areas of focus and giving structure and momentum to its enterprise strategy work.
Mehra will lead enterprise marketing strategy, digital experience, corporate communications and brand stewardship, with a stated focus on building data-driven, AI-enabled marketing capabilities across Ameritas' business lines. That brief sits within an industry-wide shift rather than as an isolated initiative. Accenture found 93% of life insurers have increased AI investment by at least 5% over the past three years, with 43% planning increases of more than 25% over the next three. Separate LIMRA-backed research found 87% of life insurance carriers already using AI in at least one operational area. Wilkinson said Mehra's strategic mindset and ability to build high-performing teams positioned him to lead the marketing organization through that transition.
MacDonald brings more than 20 years of experience helping financial institutions accelerate growth and navigate market shifts, with executive education at the Wharton School. Mehra brings more than 20 years across marketing, design, product and technology, with a Master of Science in industrial engineering with a concentration in human-computer interaction.
