About MS Amlin

MS Amlin is an international global specialty commercial insurer and reinsurer wholly owned by the Japanese insurance company MS&AD. It is divided into three global strategic units: reinsurance, property & casualty, and marine & aviation.

MS Amlin’s insurance products offer coverage for casualty, crisis management, marine, natural resources, and property.

The company also underwrites more than 30 classes of business across its three segments: Ms Amlin MG, MS Amlin Underwriting ltd, and Amlin Insurance SE. Its reinsurance products focus on credit, surety, and political risks; agriculture; aviation; casualty; cyber; engineering; marine; mortgage risk; motor; personal accident; international property; North America property; proportional property; terrorism; and workers’ compensation.

MS Amlin has also partnered with Leadenhall Capital Partners (LCP), which has become a significant part of the company’s reinsurance business and a core element in its ongoing strategy.

History of MS Amlin

MS Amlin traces its roots back to the foundation of Knox-Johnston Insurance Brokers in 1969, which was founded by Chris Knox-Johnston to provide boat insurance in the UK. The company attended the Southampton Boat Show regularly using a converted London bus as its mobile exhibition stand.

In 1992, the company merged with Haven Insurance to form Haven Knox-Johnston. In 2016, the MS&AD Group acquired the company and renamed it MS Amlin.

In 2018, MS Amlin partnered with artificial intelligence (AI) firm Cytora to improve its commercial underwriting performance and drive premium growth. As part of the partnership, Cytora started facilitating better risk selection and pricing in MS Amlin’s small and medium-sized enterprises automated trading book by providing risk scores.

In the same year, MS Amlin also partnered with specialty cyber (re)insurance analytics and underwriting firm Envelop Risk to combine the latter’s augmented intelligence capabilities and the former’s specialist lead underwriting and global scale. MS Amlin AG provides the capacity for the reinsurance portfolio and assists with risk management and advising on reported claims. Meanwhile, Envelop Risk is responsible for sourcing, underwriting, product development, and marketing of cyber reinsurance deals.

In 2019, MS Amlin improved its protection and indemnity (P&I) capacity to offer as much as US$1 billion for ship owners’ P&I and a maximum of US$500 million for charterers’ liability. The company also commenced trading risks on Whitespace Software System’s new cloud-based platform.

However, MS Amlin also decided to discontinue nine classes of businesses and operations that no longer form a part of its future strategic direction. The business classes included P&C UK insurance’s corporate property, real estate, package binders, fleet, and casualty. Meanwhile, the operation classes included bloodstock in P&C international, UK yacht, and AUA insolvency risk services.

Beazley became the chief executive officer of the MS Amlin London Market Group (LMG) in November 2016 and MS Amlin AG in September 2018.

MS Amlin partners with UK charities through its Community & Charities Panel, which is chaired by a member of the company’s senior management team. It also encourages its employees to raise funds for their chosen charities and causes, and then supports the chosen charities through further donations. In 2016, MS Amlin supported more than 40 UK charities by donating a total of £150,000.

MS Amlin also gives back to communities by creating initiatives that focus on education and youth.
