Two major insurance organizations announced senior leadership appointments this week, one completing a rapid C-suite buildout and one elevating an internal practice leader to a national role.
HDI Global US has appointed John Flannery (pictured, left) as chief marketing and communications officer, reporting to chief commercial officer Uwe Schoberth.
Flannery joins from Vantage Risk, where he held the same title, and brings more than two decades of commercial insurance and corporate specialty experience spanning prior roles as interim chief marketing officer for General Insurance at AIG, and senior leadership positions at Validus Holdings and AXA XL.
Flannery described the opportunity in terms of a specific moment in HDI's US story.
"HDI Global has a compelling story to tell in the United States. The company combines global scale, technical expertise and financial strength with a clear commitment to investing in people, capabilities, and long-term partnerships. What attracted me most was the opportunity to help shape and communicate an ambitious growth strategy at a time of significant momentum," Flannery said.
The hire continues a rapid sequence of senior appointments at HDI Global US under the carrier's four-year Xcelerate29 strategy, which targets the US as its primary international growth market. Insurance Business has tracked Shadi Albert's appointment as CEO in July and Uwe Schoberth's appointment as chief commercial officer in the weeks immediately before Flannery's arrival, meaning HDI has now assembled a CEO, a chief commercial officer and a chief marketing officer in rapid succession.
Flannery's role reporting directly to Schoberth signals the two functions are being closely coordinated, consistent with a carrier actively trying to shift how brokers and clients perceive it in the US market rather than simply expanding quietly.
A dedicated communications leader joining HDI Global US specifically to sharpen broker-facing messaging signals that brokers should expect more proactive, structured outreach from the carrier on risk appetite and capabilities in the coming months. Brokers who haven't actively engaged with HDI Global US in recent years should treat this three-hire buildout, CEO, chief commercial officer and now CMO in quick succession, as a concrete signal that the carrier is building the internal infrastructure to support meaningful distribution growth rather than simply rebranding an existing market position.
This is a reasonable moment to revisit HDI as a live option on corporate and specialty submissions rather than assuming its US presence is unchanged from prior years.
Marsh has appointed Alexander Reath (pictured, right) as US Real Estate and Hospitality Practice Leader within Marsh Risk, based in Boston and reporting to Darren Cromwell, industry practice group leader for Marsh Risk US and Canada.
Reath brings more than 25 years of property insurance experience, including more than a decade leading Marsh's New England Property practice and a recent role as US Property Real Estate Leader, where he developed underwriting strategies and placed complex real estate and hospitality risks.
For co-brokers and retail agents placing large or complex real estate and hospitality accounts through Marsh, Reath's elevation from a regional property leadership role to a national practice leader signals increased coordination across Marsh's real estate capabilities on a national basis. Brokers whose commercial real estate clients hold assets across multiple regions, currently handled through separate Marsh regional teams, should reach out directly to understand how Reath's national mandate changes routing, resource access, and accountability on those accounts.
Given the ongoing property insurance challenges in hospitality-heavy markets like Florida, California and New York, having a single national practice leader coordinating Marsh's response may also mean more consistent market access and strategy across asset classes than a regionally siloed structure would typically provide.
