What are the ingredients that turn a retail agency into a great retail agency?

We asked the winner of the Insurance Business Awards “Retail Agency of the Year – $75m in revenue or less” to tell us about their success, and their views of the industry.

Terry Lowe, print production and media manager at retail agency winner Eagan Insurance Agency, and 26-year industry veteran, gave us some insights.

In terms of winning this award, what do you think made you the best this past year?
“I believe Eagan’s position in the community sets us above the rest. We have been in business since 1954, the Eagan family has been in business in New Orleans since 1854.

“We focus every day on improving the overall business climate in the area, whether it’s enhancing the insurance industry or contributing to many philanthropies or providing our employees with a safe and enjoyable workplace.

“We encourage our employees to get involved in any way they can, and many of them are serious over-achievers.”

What is your agency recipe for success?
“Remember to always respect our reputation in the community.

“The Eagan family is well-known and held in high esteem in the New Orleans area.  We expect our employees to treat customers as if they were close family members and friends.”

What do you see happening in the industry in the coming years?
“There will be a strong shift towards technology-driven business. However, I believe personal involvement will remain significant. There will be more emphasis on cyber liability, crime and fraud coverage and condos/renters.”

What excites/worries you about the state of the industry?
“I’m excited about a new generation of potential insureds to grow the business, but worried about the possibility that the younger generation is too involved in online purchasing and getting the lowest price without paying attention to the strength and ratings of insurance companies.”
