RLI Corp. has spent three consecutive quarters growing its casualty book while watching the segment’s underwriting profit shrink to almost nothing. That tension, sitting quietly inside an otherwise solid set of third-quarter results, is the detail worth paying attention to.

The Peoria, Illinois-based specialty insurer posted an overall combined ratio of 86.2 for the quarter, underwriting income of $58.8 million, and a 13% rise in net investment income. Gross premiums written grew 2%, led by casualty. But the casualty segment itself, RLI’s largest by premium volume, writing $330.9 million in the quarter, produced just $1 million in underwriting income on a combined ratio of 99.6.

What the reserves are masking

That $1 million figure rests almost entirely on $8.2 million of favorable development from prior accident years. The reserve credits in each quarter have exceeded the segment’s reported underwriting income, meaning the current-year result before those credits was negative in each of the three quarters. The same pattern held in the first and second quarters: casualty combined ratios of 97.1 and 99.3, respectively, each propped up by reserve credits of $14.5 million and $13 million. The nine-month casualty combined ratio stands at 98.7, and the reserve releases supporting it have been substantial in each quarter, even as the underlying performance has softened, though the Q3 release of $8.2 million was smaller than Q1’s $14.5 million and Q2’s $13 million.

RLI is still writing more casualty business. Gross premiums written in the segment grew 8% over the nine months to September, even as the margin on that business has compressed to the point where current-accident-year casualty is likely running at a loss. RLI does not publish an ex-development combined ratio, so that underlying figure is not directly disclosed, but the arithmetic from the quarterly releases makes the direction clear.

Property is carrying the quarter

Property, RLI’s second-largest segment, delivered $50.4 million in underwriting income on a combined ratio of 60.1, nearly identical to Q3 2025’s 60.2, despite ongoing rate softening in the E&S property market. Surety improved to a 79.8 combined ratio from 85.0 a year earlier. Those two segments are generating the margin that keeps the consolidated result looking clean. CEO Craig Kliethermes described the quarter as “consistent, disciplined execution,” pointing to property and surety performance alongside the investment income contribution.

RLI has posted underwriting profits for 30 consecutive years, rated A++ by AM Best, and is among the most closely watched specialty underwriters in the US market. When a carrier with that track record reports casualty margin pressure building across three straight quarters, it reflects something broader than one company’s mix of business. Social inflation - rising litigation costs, larger jury awards, longer claims tails - has been reshaping casualty loss costs across the specialty market, and the reserve releases that have supported results at RLI and peers are a finite resource drawn from prior accident years written at better economics than today’s.

For any broker placing specialty casualty business, the trajectory visible in RLI’s numbers suggests that the pricing environment in that segment is likely to tighten before it eases.

RLI management was scheduled to hold its Q3 earnings call today. A transcript was not available at time of publication.
