Residential and light commercial construction insurer Builders Insurance Group has announced that it has appointed J. Stephen Berry as senior vice-president, general counsel and secretary.

Berry succeeds Craig Edwards, who will retire in July.

As SVP, general counsel and secretary, Berry will be the primary legal advisor for the company. His responsibilities include ensuring Builders Insurance Group remains compliant with business ethics, maintaining information security, privacy policies, human resource policies, insurance department regulation, as well as serving an integral role in the strategic direction of the company, a release said.

“Stephen brings 21 years of leadership and legal expertise to our company, and we are very pleased to welcome him to our team,” said Builders Insurance Group president and CEO Patrick Mitchell in a statement. “His extensive experience in insurance law and litigation from coverage dispute resolution to contract negotiations makes him an important asset as we strengthen our ability to provide outstanding products and services to our agents and policyholders.”

Mitchell also took the opportunity to thank Edwards for his service.

“We also express deep gratitude to Craig Edwards for serving Builders Insurance Group for almost 15 years. We wish him the best in his retirement,” he added.

Berry was most recently a partner at Dentons US, leading the insurance team of the firm’s Atlanta office. He was named as one of the “Best Lawyers in America” and in the “Georgia Superlawyers” list, and authored Georgia Property and Liability Insurance Law (West, 2012). Berry has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Richmond and received a Masters of Arts in European History and his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia.
