The profile of risk is changing. The onset of technology and rapidly evolving AI means that how organizations assess and measure risk has to inevitably change too.
With that in mind, Cowbell has built on its existing Cowbell Factors (CF), which are its proprietary rating system for measuring risk in enterprises, by adding three new AI-centric elements. “These three factors answer different questions, and a business can be strong on one and weak on another,” added Cowbell CPO Rajeev Gupta. “Together they follow the standard risk decomposition: how bad it could be, how likely it is, and how well it is controlled. Collapsing them into a single number would hide exactly the information a broker or underwriter needs to act on.”

At its core, AI Exposure measures a business’s viability within the AI ecosystem. AI Exposure measures how much damage an AI system could do if it fails, while also looking at what the AI is actually permitted to do.
“Whether it acts or only advises, how broad its permissions are, whether those actions can be reversed, what data it can reach, and whether a human approves consequential decisions,” added Gupta. “Severity is the part traditional cover cannot see. Two AI systems can behave identically in every conversation and still carry entirely different risk. One drafts a summary. The other sends payments. Autonomy is the largest severity multiplier in AI risk, and nobody has been measuring it continuously.”
AI Vulnerability CF evaluates how safely and reliably AI systems perform within their intended operating environments. Because as systems go on to wield greater authority, their subsequent reliability is ever more important.
“AI Vulnerability measures how often an AI system actually goes wrong,” added Gupta. “It’s scored from the system's own recorded activity: credential and data leakage, prompt injection and jailbreak attempts, fabricated answers, unsafe output, and operational failures such as error and tool-failure rates.”
But why exactly did Cowbell add this factor?
“This is the question a questionnaire cannot answer,” explained Gupta. “Asking a business whether its AI is safe produces an opinion. Watching what the AI did produces evidence. This is the factor that turns AI governance from an annual attestation into a continuous measurement.”
