Too old to insure – company looks for galley worker coverage

A Connecticut-based firm is finding it difficult to get insurance for its galley workers after it took over Washington State Ferries’ galley and vending contracts last year.

Centerplate said it is running into legal tangles because it cannot find an insurer for its galley workers because of the high risk nature of the job; the advanced age of the employees, who are mostly women over 45; and the fact that the job is performed on water.

Olympic Cascade Services previously employed these workers and was able to provide them with insurance coverage, a report by the HeraldNet said. As such, Inlandboatmen Union business agent Chris Simmons said that the claim that no-one is coming forward to insure the workers of a national company such as Centerplate is not credible.

Centerplate’s contract does not require the company to provide health insurance or negotiate with the union.
