Distribution has changed. What once looked like a transaction-driven model is shifting toward something closer to strategic partnership - and for carriers, that shift demands more than competitive pricing and available capacity. It demands a different way of showing up for brokers, especially when the market softens and price starts to dominate the conversation.
In this interview, Tony Beal explores what a genuine broker-carrier partnership looks like day to day, what the strongest relationships have in common, and how carriers can demonstrate real value when rate is no longer the differentiator. He also offers brokers a straight answer to the question they should be asking: how do you tell the difference between a carrier that is truly invested in the relationship and one that is simply saying the right things?
[00:00] Tony Beal: Price will always be important.
[00:01] Tony Beal: I think what's important is that we move the conversation away from that.
[00:14] Tony Beal: Transactions, clearly everyday part of the business.
[00:17] Tony Beal: I think we've really moved to the effective carrier and/or underwriter really is helping a producer provide solutions and really ultimately helping them find new business opportunities.
[00:28] Tony Beal: So if you're helping a producer broker get new, new business, you'll ultimately win.
[00:33] Tony Beal: And so that's where I really believe that we're moving more strategically and away from the transactional concept.
[00:43] Tony Beal: There's a couple of different things and you would get a number of different answers from folks, but I would say responsiveness is always critically important.
[00:50] Tony Beal: Consistency. And then third, I just say relationships all day, win out.
[00:55] Tony Beal: And that's where you're both truly aligned and each other winning.
[00:59] Tony Beal: And those— it's pretty simple, right?
[01:00] Tony Beal: If you're picking up the phone when you get a call and you're responsive, even if that's the extent of, I can't get to it today, but I'm going to give you a call tomorrow.
[01:08] Tony Beal: Do what you say you're going to do. Yeah. Responsiveness, consistency, and just good relationships.
[01:18] Tony Beal: That would be trust, transparency, and I would say slash character and integrity.
[01:22] Tony Beal: I think truly just helping them win-win, right? Like it's that simple.
[01:25] Tony Beal: I mean, brokers know when it feels authentic. Carriers know that too.
[01:29] Tony Beal: And that's when you're invested in each other.
[01:31] Tony Beal: It's just a lot easier and it just, it feels more strategic as well. Price will always be important.
[01:41] Tony Beal: I think what's important is that we move the conversation away from that.
[01:45] Tony Beal: What differentiates the transaction? How can I make my broker look much better?
[01:49] Tony Beal: So is it the terms and conditions? Is it truly— I know we were using the word, but capacity.
[01:54] Tony Beal: Should we pull in claims? Do we want to meet with the president of the vertical?
[01:58] Tony Beal: Like, how can I make this experience with— for the client different to help my broker win?
[02:08] Tony Beal: First of all, I think they know, but I think that you want an underwriter who's generally invested in building their portfolio with good underwriting integrity.
[02:18] Tony Beal: So if you feel like you have an underwriter or a carrier that is writing business just to scale, that's a short-term win, not a long-term sustainable, profitable opportunity.
[02:28] Tony Beal: And so I just think you're looking for the people that are invested in you to win the clients over time and for them to retain those together.
