Shane Fitzsimons, the former chief financial officer who left American International Group earlier this year following a medical leave of absence, has passed away.

When Fitzsimons’ medical leave was announced in January, then global chief actuary Mark Lyons stepped in as interim CFO. Lyons, however, was fired a couple of weeks later due to violations of confidentiality/non-disclosure obligations.

The position was subsequently filled by Sabra Purtill, who initially served in an interim capacity before officially succeeding Fitzsimons as finance chief when he stepped down instead of returning from his medical leave.

In an online post, AIG said: “We extend our deepest sympathies to Shane’s family and friends.”

Chair and chief executive Peter Zaffino, meanwhile, posted a long statement, as seen below.

A chartered accountant from Ireland, Fitzsimons came on board AIG in 2019 and assumed the CFO role during the pandemic. Further details of his passing were not announced.
