AXIS Insurance names underwriters for renewable energy division

AXIS Insurance has appointed Sam Walsh and Mat Pifer to the roles of senior underwriter and underwriter, respectively, for its renewable energy division.

Both Walsh and Pifer will be jointly responsible for underwriting new and renewal, property and liability renewable energy business in North America, a release said. These include large wind and solar photovoltaic portfolios, as well as battery energy storage risks. The two will report to AXIS US renewable energy head Tom Cain.

“The renewable energy sector is enjoying a period of rapid growth, with the global focus on sustainability and combatting climate change driving investment in wind, solar and other renewable energy sources,” said Cain in a statement. “As a top five global carrier in renewable energy insurance, we are pleased to further strengthen our capabilities with the addition of Sam and Mat, who both bring significant experience and expertise to our team.”

Walsh was most recently serving as a senior underwriter of North American onshore wind and solar risks at GCube Insurance Services. He has more than 10 years of industry experience in the renewable energy segment, having joined GCube in 2009 as an underwriter.

Pifer spent the last four years as a senior underwriter in AXIS Insurance’s commercial management solutions team, where he underwrote public and private D&O risks. Before that, he had been a lawyer’s professional liability broker with Aon since 2011.
