Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has appointed Paul Emerson as head of customer and broker engagement in Canada.

Emerson, who is currently senior vice president, head of third-party claims in Canada, will take on this additional role while retaining his current position. He will report to Robert Romeo, head of claims, North America, while working closely with Lori Spoon, head of customer & broker engagement, BHSI.

“We are excited to expand our customer & broker engagement team in Canada as we continue to grow our presence and deepen relationships,” said Spoon. “Leading our third-party claims team in Canada, Paul has worked closely with teams across our business and has been pivotal to deploying our ‘claims is our product’ philosophy to strengthen our customer and broker relationships. This expanded role is a natural extension of this success.”

“Paul has an excellent record of building and leading our Canadian claims operation and an outstanding talent for fortifying relationships through thoughtful claims resolutions,” added Romeo. “His proven expertise and relationship-building success make him an excellent choice to further elevate our engagement with customers and brokers across Canada.”

Based in Toronto, Emerson joined BHSI in 2015 as vice president, liability claims, and was later promoted to lead the third-party claims division in Canada. He also has experience as a practicing attorney, specializing in liability defense litigation.

Emerson’s appointment comes after BHSI announced the promotion of James Byrnes as head of construction professional for North America. Byrnes assumed the role in April, after serving as vice president of construction professional for BHSI’s US Eastern Region.

“In his new role, he will lead our efforts to take our flourishing construction professional business to the next level and bring the certainty of BHSI’s financial strength, underwriting acumen, and ‘claims is our product’ philosophy to construction firms and contractors across the region,” said John Roe, BHSI head of casualty construction for North America.
