The owner of a truck in gold paint has been charged after police uncovered a scheme to defraud an insurance company.

Local Calgary police initially reported that an “unknown” suspect had broken into a fenced compound on property owned by DiVita Auto Design on February 01, 2020. While inside, the suspect supposedly loaded a gold-colored Dodge Ram truck on to a flatbed and escaped with the vehicle using another truck towing the flatbed.

The golden truck was later found heavily damaged in the McLean Creek area on February 27, 2020.

Police launched an investigation following an initial request for public information about the stolen truck. Authorities found that the owner of the gold truck owed a considerable amount of money to the auto repair shop which was storing it. The investigation concluded that the owner had stolen the truck in order to secure an insurance payment.

Authorities also found that the auto repair shop – DiVita Auto Design – was not involved in the theft.

The truck’s owner – 23-year-old Scott William Dombowsky-Oneski of Rocky View, Alberta – was charged with two counts of fraud over $5,000 and one count each of break and enter and public mischief. CTV News reported that that he is expected in court on June 26, 2020.
