The Insurance Institute of Canada (IIC) has completed its move to a new office at 150 York Street, Suite 600, in downtown Toronto.
The relocation brings together the Toronto offices of the IIC, the Insurance Institute of Ontario and its Greater Toronto Area (GTA) Chapter, which had previously operated out of separate premises. The new site also houses the Institute's production facilities and a modernized set of GTA classrooms and exam centre.
The GTA exam centre is now open for members to book in-person exams for national program courses and licensing. All future in-person exams scheduled to be written in Toronto will take place at the new address going forward.
Peter Hohman, president and CEO of the Insurance Institute of Canada, said the move marked a new chapter after more than 30 years at the organization's previous Toronto location.
"We were at our previous offices in Toronto for more than three decades," he said. "150 York Street gives us the opportunity to bring together all of our Toronto operations within a single location. I anticipate collaboration and innovation will continue to thrive here at 150 York, and in all the regions served through our Institutes and Chapters across Canada."
The new premises sit in Toronto's Financial District, giving visitors direct access to the underground PATH network and transit connections, along with other amenities in the surrounding York and Adelaide corridor.
Founded in 1899, the IIC is a not-for-profit organization that sets professional education standards for Canada's property and casualty insurance industry through 19 volunteer-driven provincial institutes and chapters across the country. It serves more than 41,000 members nationally, including roughly 20,000 students and 18,000-plus graduates of its Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) and Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP) designation programs.
The Toronto location is not incidental. Ontario's P&C insurance industry directly employs more than 72,000 people, according to Insurance Bureau of Canada data, making it the largest provincial concentration of P&C jobs in the country and the natural centre of gravity for the IIC's exam and classroom capacity.
Nationally, the industry supports an estimated 297,000 jobs and contributes roughly $38 billion to Canada's GDP.
That scale comes with a documented talent strain. A 2023 IIC demographic study of the P&C industry flagged recruitment and retention as most urgent for occupations including actuaries, underwriters and adjusters, concentrated disproportionately in Ontario relative to other provinces.
A consolidated national and Ontario office, including a modernized exam centre, does not resolve that shortage on its own, but it does give the Institute more capacity to deliver credentialing at scale in the province facing the sharpest hiring pressure for these specialized roles.
