Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) is continuing to restore services that were stalled by a 10-week strike that began in late August, according to an update issued by the Crown corporation on its website.
In its announcement, MPI said that new knowledge and road test appointments are now open for scheduling, with the exception of Class 6 road tests, which are currently seasonally unavailable.
All Class 1-6 and air brake knowledge tests, along with Class 2-5 road tests that were cancelled due to the strike, have also been rescheduled, according to MPI.
Additionally, the corporation said it continues to “work collaboratively” with its training school partners to resume Class 1 road testing services.
As for its claims services, estimating and adjusting appointments for all new claims will resume starting November 13, according to MPI.
MPI said it is contacting customers who submitted claims during the labour interruption to reschedule cancelled estimating appointments.
After MPI employees returned to work on November 3, the Crown corporation’s board chair asked Manitobans for patience amid a backlog of approximately 11,000 insurance claims, 15,000 road tests, and several other cancelled services.
“All I can do is ask Manitoba ratepayers to be patient with us a little bit longer while we try and get through all of this and get our services back on track,” said Carmen Nedohin, who took over the role after being appointed by the NDP government.
Nedohin said MPI management has stepped in to help process claims and that overtime is being offered to employees.
She estimated it would take a few months before MPI returns to its expected delivery pace.
