The Hartford reveals John Wilcox as new chief

New man at the helm will lead company’s efforts to drive growth through innovation

There is a new man in the hotseat for The Hartford – with John Wilcox revealed as the company’s chief strategy and ventures officer.

Wilcox will take over this newly-created role effective today (September 12) and will lead the company’s efforts to identify and capitalise on new opportunities in order to drive growth. In particular he will focus on innovation and improving operating capabilities while reporting to the company’s chairman and CEO Christopher Swift.

According to a news release making the announcement, Wilcox boasts nearly three decades of insurance industry experience including four years at The Hartford where he held senior leadership positions in corporate strategy and personal lines.

“Establishing this role enables us to advance our strategy while maintaining our focus on strong day-to-day execution,” said Swift. “John is a proven leader with unique insight grounded in a deep understanding of our industry and company, and I am pleased to welcome him back to The Hartford.”

Since 2012, Wilcox has served as president and chief operating officer at Risk Strategies Company, a national insurance brokerage firm. Prior to joining The Hartford in 2008, Wilcox was a partner with McKinsey & Company. His career includes previous positions with Hyperion Capital Management, Deloitte & Touche Management Consulting and Marsh & McLennan.

In addition, he has a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College and a master’s of business administration from the University of Chicago.
