For this year’s list of the Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada by Corporate Knights, The Co-operators came in at 3rd place.

This marks the seventh consecutive year the multi-line insurer has made the list, and among the top 10.

Notably, three other co-operatives made the list.

"Addressing society's economic, environmental and social priorities is at the heart of our sustainability efforts and stems ultimately from our co-operative principles," commented The Co-operators president and CEO Kathy Bardswick.

"Being recognized as a leading corporate citizen alongside a number of other Canadian co-operatives speaks volumes about the contributions the co-operative sector makes to help create a resilient, more equitable society and economy."

The Co-operators launched various initiatives in recent times, reflecting its commitment to being a good corporate citizen. It was the first Canadian insurance company in 2015 to offer overland flood insurance by launching its Comprehensive Water product in Alberta.

In spring, the insurer announced its commitment to impact investing and established a target of 6% to 10% of its invested assets to be classified as impact investments by the end of 2018. The Co-operators also disclosed the carbon footprint of its equity portfolio and its investment firm as a responsible signatory to the Montreal Carbon Pledge.
