Trisura hosts broker softball event to raise money for charity

Non-Profits & Charities

What happens when 200 brokers get together to compete in a softball tournament? They help children with life-threatening illnesses to experience their wildest dreams.

That was, at least, the result of Wednesday’s charity broker softball tournament hosted by Trisura in Toronto. All proceeds from the event – which featured about 200 brokers across 14 teams – were donated to Children’s Wish, a charity that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses.

Trisura CEO Mike George said the charity softball tournament served two purposes: it brought together the specialty insurer’s broker partners for a fun day in the sun, and it raised valuable dollars for a cause close to his heart (he is also on the charity’s board).

“Trisura has been successful only because of our broker partners. We love to invite our brokers out for a fun day,” he said.

“For the last two years, the charity we support has been Children’s Wish. Its aim is to grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. It’s a great cause. The aim [of the event] is to raise $20,000, which will be two children’s wishes.”

In addition to each team’s registration fee, there was a raffle to raise additional funds, as well as a separate non-perishable food drive for local food banks.

George said he wasn’t expecting to hit any homeruns on the field. The goal for the day was just to walk away without injury, he said.

“I’m 53 now. I’m up to two knee braces. My big objective is to make it through the day unscathed.”

Greg Petrela, president of Petrela, Winter & Associates, one of the brokerages with a team at the tournament, said the event was a great initiative “by a really progressive insurance company.”

“We’re happy to support the super cause that they’ve chosen to dedicate their time and effort to,” he said.
