The children attending Camp Klahanie this summer are enjoying some renovated facilities – thanks to one insurer and its broker partner stepping forward to make it happen.

Economical Insurance, in partnership with local insurance broker Banter MacEwan Feagan Insurance Brokers, came forward with a $10,000 donation to help weather-proof the camp’s multi-purpose picnic shelter, one of the most active and functional areas of the camp.

“We are sincerely grateful for Economical’s support of Camp Klahanie,” said Scott MacEwan of Banter MacEwan Feagan. “For years, the picnic shelter could only be used in fair weather. The reality is that spring rain, early summer bugs and fall winds drive campers inside other buildings for more favourable conditions. Economical’s donation is making this focal point of the camp functional for three seasons of the year.”

The picnic shelter, named Economical Pavilion, is now fully screened with retractable screens, and outfitted with heavy duty rollup clear plastic curtains. Much of the project, including the installation of the screens and a new roof, is being completed by community volunteers.

“As a Goderich resident and former Klahanie camper, it’s great to see a place that I once called home for many summer weeks being restored to provide a real outdoor camping experience,” said Mary Beth Alexander, Economical’s assistant vice-president, organizational development and corporate marketing. “The camp really is a cherished asset in Huron County. Many Goderich families share memories of their experiences at Camp Klahanie that can now be enjoyed by future generations.”

While the camp is in full swing, there are several revitalization projects going on to provide better facilities for co-ed camping and to enhance the outdoor experience at the camp, thanks to the donation and the volunteer work donated by the Goderich Lions Club.
