Co-operators turns to tech

Co-operators has completed the implementation of Guidewire ClaimCenter on the Guidewire Cloud Platform, moving the majority of its property and casualty (P&C) insurance operations to a cloud-based infrastructure.

The transition includes coverage across the provinces where the company operates, as well as an extension of the system to its subsidiary, Sovereign Insurance.

The deployment finalizes a multi-phase modernization effort that began with the company’s shift to Guidewire PolicyCenter and BillingCenter in 2023.

With all three core systems now operating on Guidewire’s cloud environment, Co-operators becomes a full InsuranceSuite user on the platform.

Co-operators, a Canadian co-operative offering insurance and financial services, has worked with Guidewire since 2007.

According to executive vice president and chief information officer Harry Pickett, the ClaimCenter migration drew on the company’s previous platform experiences, which contributed to completing the project on time while minimizing disruption to claims services.

“The full suite on the Guidewire Cloud Platform provides us with more stability and security, and establishes a solid foundation for future enhancements, enabling us to be faster in implementing new features and capabilities that will deliver value to our stakeholders,” said Pickett.

Michael Mahoney, head of professional services at Guidewire, acknowledged the conclusion of the implementation and reaffirmed the company’s engagement in supporting Co-operators' future development.

“We look forward to working with the company to grow its business and continue providing financial security for Canadians and their communities as it’s done for the past 80 years,” he said.

The shift is part of a growing trend among insurers using digital tools to adapt to market and regulatory demands while improving the efficiency of internal operations. Headquartered in Canada and operating since 1945, Co-operators offers multi-line insurance and investment services. It has set targets to reach net-zero emissions in its operations by 2040 and its investments by 2050.

The platform it now fully uses, Guidewire Cloud, supports core operations for more than 570 P&C insurance companies in 42 countries.
