Throw away those flood-damaged items: ABI

Catastrophe & Flood

By Terry Gangcuangco

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has reassured flood-affected Millom residents and businesses that they can clear out flood-damaged items without worrying about their insurance claims.

“Being flooded is very traumatic,” said ABI senior policy adviser for property insurance Laura Hughes. “Insurers understand that those affected will want to get on with cleaning up their homes and businesses as soon as possible and will have their own staff on the ground to provide support with drying out and repairs.”

Hughes stressed: “There’s no need for people to keep badly flood-damaged items in their properties. It’s a good idea to take as many photos as possible and, with things like ruined carpets and soft-furnishings, cut out a sample to keep.”

The ABI added that those affected by last weekend’s flooding in Cumbria should have already heard from their providers; if not, they should call their claims lines as soon as possible. As for the cut out samples, the trade body said that will help make sure insurers can provide a similar replacement.

Anything that could be a health hazard, on the other hand, should be disposed of immediately.

“I welcome the advice from The Association of British Insurers,” said Trudy Harrison MP, who noted that some residents are afraid their claims may be affected if they remove ruined items such as carpets before insurers have seen the damage.

Harrison added, as quoted by Cumbria Crack: “Living with stinking carpets is clearly unacceptable. I urge everyone to take on the advice given and if anyone needs any more information please contact my office.”
