Bspoke Underwriting has secured a new five-year capacity deal via the Accelerant Risk Exchange, providing £50 million of capacity annually to support its growing portfolio of specialist personal lines schemes.
The agreement is structured as a multi‑year, multi‑line arrangement and is intended to provide continuity for existing coverholders while creating additional headroom to develop new niche schemes in the UK market.
Multi-year capacity in a volatile market
The deal comes as capacity for UK personal lines schemes, particularly in non‑standard and niche areas, remains uneven after several years of rate volatility, tightening appetites and insurer retrenchment from smaller delegated books.
Accelerant, which operates a data‑driven “risk exchange” linking MGAs with a panel of rated risk‑capital providers, has positioned itself as a source of longer‑term, portfolio‑level support for speciality MGAs. The platform’s marketing emphasises its ability to offer five‑year capacity arrangements, in contrast to the one‑year, line‑by‑line commitments that have historically left MGAs exposed to abrupt changes in appetite and withdrawals.
Since launching in 2018, Accelerant has built a network of more than 95 risk‑capital partners and supports over 500 specialist products across 22 countries. Other MGAs, including newly launched Amiga Specialty, have also turned to the Risk Exchange for multi‑year, multi‑product capacity in the past year, underlining demand for longer‑duration backing in the delegated authority space.
For Bspoke, the new facility fits a strategy of combining specialist product expertise with stable capacity to support scheme partners. The group rebranded from UK General in 2023 following a private‑equity‑backed restructuring and has since pursued selective acquisitions and organic growth in niche segments.
Specialist personal lines focus
Bspoke Underwriting, part of the Bspoke Insurance Group, focuses on providing capacity for UK personal lines schemes and specialises in consumer products that are niche or distributed through non‑mainstream channels. Its current portfolio comprises around 20 specialist products and a mix of schemes covering contents and personal possessions, events, leisure and cherished items, and motor ancillary covers such as key, breakdown and excess protection.
Clare Knight (pictured, left), managing director of Bspoke Underwriting, said the deal was important for both the MGU and its partners.
“Securing this five‑year partnership is an important step for us and our coverholder partners. This is a complex, multi‑line portfolio and we worked at real pace to deliver a smooth transition,” she said. “It’s been a fantastic demonstration of what can be achieved when everyone collaborates to find solutions, and our transparent, close‑working partnership with Accelerant has been central throughout. The new capacity gives us flexibility, stability and room to grow as we continue backing innovative niche products and specialist distribution.”
Meanwhile, William Coates (pictured, right), member relationships director at Accelerant, said the company is "pleased to support the continued expansion of [Bspoke Underwriting's] non-standard portfolio."
Signal to niche scheme partners
Bspoke Underwriting said the additional capacity and the five‑year term reinforce its message to scheme partners that it is “open for business” for well‑structured niche personal lines schemes, particularly outside mainstream mass‑market distribution.
In practice, that is likely to mean further development of products such as non‑standard household and let property, holiday homes, student and tenants’ contents, among others. These areas, Bspoke said, are areas where it already has a presence and where traditional composite capacity can be inconsistent.
In a UK personal lines market adjusting to Consumer Duty, tighter value‑for‑money scrutiny and sustained claims inflation, the combination of specialist distribution, granular underwriting and longer‑term capacity is expected to remain a key differentiator for MGUs and coverholders operating in the niche and non‑standard space.
