Insurance Information Institute

The Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I) is a nonprofit organization that explains insurance to consumers, journalists, regulators, and the industry itself. Insurance companies fund the group, but it does not sell policies or lobby lawmakers. Its work centers on research, data, and plain-language education about how insurance works.

History of the Insurance Information Institute

Triple-I traces back to 1960, when the insurance industry set it up as a shared communications outlet in New York City. The goal was simple: give reporters, regulators, and the public one trustworthy place to ask questions about insurance.

  • 1960: insurers establish the organization in NYC to serve as an independent and industry-funded source of insurance information.
  • 2020: the Insurance Information Institute completes an affiliation with The Institutes, a nonprofit risk management and insurance education group headquartered in Malvern, Pennsylvania.

The affiliation connected Triple-I to a larger research and education network. The organization kept its own name and staff, and it now operates from The Institutes’ campus in Malvern, Pennsylvania.

What does Triple-I cover?

The Insurance Information Institute organizes its content by insurance type and by hazard. This structure matches the questions people search for most, and economists, actuaries, and communications staff produce the material behind it.

  • auto, homeowners and renters, life, business, cyber, and workers’ compensation insurance, each explained separately
  • preparedness and claims guidance for hurricanes, wildfires, tornadoes, winter storms, flood, and earthquakes
  • Issues Briefs and research reports that turn industry data into plain-language analysis for policymakers and the media
  • the Triple-I Daily, a members-only newsletter of insurance news and trends for employees and students at member organizations

These resources give readers a starting point on a coverage question or a disaster-recovery process without wading through policy language.

Membership and structure

Insurers do not have to join the Insurance Information Institute to read its research, but membership funds the operation. Carrier members range from regional mutuals to national and global insurers, and they include personal lines, commercial lines, and reinsurance companies.

  • insurance carrier membership, open to property/casualty, life/health, and reinsurance companies, with dues based on written premium
  • associate membership, for brokers, trade associations, and companies that serve the insurance industry
  • academia membership, for university faculty, staff, and students studying risk and insurance
  • Independent Agent Pro, a subscription option built for independent insurance agents

An Executive Leadership Committee guides the organization’s priorities. Its chair, typically the president and CEO of a member company, is elected to the role.

Research and industry outreach

The Insurance Information Institute also produces Issues Briefs on topics such as legal system abuse, homeowners insurance costs, and cyber risk. Journalists and policymakers use these briefs for context on fast-moving issues.

  • a Non-Resident Scholars program that connects the group with academics researching insurance and risk topics
  • outreach supporting insurance career awareness among students, including partnerships with historically Black colleges and universities
  • the Joint Industry Forum, an annual event that rotates among major US cities and brings together insurance executives, regulators, and researchers

These programs carry the Insurance Information Institute’s research past newsroom contacts and into classrooms, conference rooms, and legislative hearings.
