United Services Automobile Association (USAA) is a member-owned financial services organization based in San Antonio, Texas. The reciprocal exchange serves active-duty military members, veterans, and their families with insurance, banking, and investment products. It grew from a small group of Army officers who agreed to insure each other’s cars. Today it ranks among the country’s largest personal-lines insurers.

A group of Army officers founded the organization in 1922 to insure each other’s vehicles. Officers of the Navy and Marine Corps joined soon after, and the group took its current name in 1924. USAA operated mostly by mail for its first several decades, then modernized through the second half of the century.
United Services Automobile Association grew from a small association of Army officers into a financial services provider for millions of military families. Each expansion of eligibility widened its member base without changing its focus on the military community.
United Services Automobile Association underwrites personal auto and property insurance directly for its military-connected membership. Coverage for aircraft, motorhomes, classic cars, and watercraft works differently: the USAA Insurance Agency brokers these specialty policies to third-party carriers rather than underwriting them itself.
The USAA Insurance Agency began offering that cyber coverage through a 2021 partnership with Blink by Chubb, giving members a stand-alone policy built for personal cyber events. The firm also operates USAA Federal Savings Bank, offering checking, savings, and lending products. It no longer manages investment and retirement accounts directly, since Victory Capital and Charles Schwab took over those businesses in 2019 and 2020, but members can still reach investment and retirement planning support through that Schwab referral relationship.
USAA operates as a reciprocal exchange, an ownership structure in which policyholders effectively insure one another rather than answer to outside shareholders. That structure sets United Services Automobile Association apart from most publicly traded carriers, since few large personal-lines insurers use it at similar scale.
Insurance Business has repeatedly counted USAA among the country’s 10 largest P&C insurers by market share. Its auto and home lines drive most of that volume. Its membership requirement narrows who can buy its policies, but that same restriction builds loyalty within the community it serves. The company competes less on broad advertising and more on the trust it has built with one demographic over decades.
USAA says its mission is to help members reach financial security through competitive products, exceptional service, and trusted advice. The company describes its goal as becoming the top choice for military families making insurance, banking, and investment decisions.
That mission traces back to United Services Automobile Association’s founding purpose. Military service once made ordinary financial services harder to access, and the group formed to close that gap.
