With only five employees and five independent contractor producers, Behling Insurance Agency is a relatively small player in the insurance arena. The agency, which has two locations in Utah and is also licensed in Idaho, Nevada, Arizona and Wyoming, was founded by the current president’s father, and its dedication to supporting today’s local agribusinesses, as well as its focus on customer service, has given it an undeniable staying power. We spoke to president Richard Behling

What makes you stand out as an agency?
First of all, 50 years of service to our community. Second would be that we are an agency that specializes in the agriculture industry. I am the first insurance agent in the state that received the AFIS designation. I feel that our farm and agribusiness customers deserve to have an agent that is continually learning how to better serve and take care of their needs.

How important do you think it is to specialize?
We have moved whether we like it or not to an era of fast service, fast claims, fast quotes. While there is nothing wrong with this, it has added to the commoditizing of an industry that will struggle with the change. No computer or pile of questionnaires will ever take the place of a well trained and educated insurance agent. It may work to some extent in personal lines but in commercial and farm lines it will never work unless the insurance companies are willing to issue a one-page declaration that states that no matter what happens, you’re covered. Not going to happen.

Where does most of your business come from?
The majority of our business comes from referrals. You treat the customer right and it pays off.

What's the most common reason for claims?
Maintenance and repair. Clean operations always have less claims. This is the same for other lines of insurance also.

How have you been able to build up your various specializations?
Educations and partnerships with carriers. Nationwide Agribusiness has been a great partner the past few years.
