AXIS Capital Holding Limited (AXIS), a global specialty underwriter and insurance company, has announced the appointment of John Owen (pictured) as the new chief executive officer of AXIS Managing Agency Limited (AMA), the firm’s managing agent arm.

“John’s extensive underwriting and leadership experience within AXIS and the Lloyd’s market equip him very well for the management and regulatory responsibilities of his new position as CEO of AXIS Managing Agency,” said Mark Gregory, previous CEO of AMA and current head of global markets at AXIS.

Who is John Owen?

Having been with the firm for 19 years, Owen has undertaken both underwriting and leadership roles in AXIS and Novae, which AXIS acquired in 2017. He was previously head of marine & political risks until May 2023 before becoming the head of specialty, global markets where he reported to Gregory.

“The depth of John’s market knowledge, his experience in underwriting across various specialty lines, and his strong relationships across the market, will strongly support our efforts to elevate AXIS as a leading specialty insurer and reinsurer,” said Gregory.

As the CEO of AMA, Owen will be responsible for overseeing AXIS’ Lloyd’s of London operations which includes Syndicate 1686.

Meanwhile, Gregory will maintain his post as a board member of AMA.
