Berkshire Hathaway came out as the top insurer on the 62
nd edition of the Fortune 500 list, placing fourth.
Companies that appear on the list roughly represent two-thirds of the U.S. GDP, with $12 trillion in revenues, $840 billion in profits, and $17 trillion in market value.
Eleven other insurers also made it to the top 100.
State Farm took 35

MetLife Inc. finished at 40
th,
AIG took 49
th place, Prudential Financial secured the 50
th place, New York Life Insurance placed 61

Nationwide entered at 69
th,
Liberty Mutual Insurance Group hit 73
rd, Massachusetts Mutual ranked 76

nd place, and Northwestern Mutual barely made the top 100 at 100
th place.
Fortune ranks each company by total revenues for their respective fiscal years. Additionally, percent change calculations for revenue, net income, and earnings per share are based on data as originally reported.
In terms of health insurance, UnitedHealth Group entered the list at 6
th place. The nation’s largest health insurer, despite its announcement that it would leave several state health exchanges next year, rose from its previous rank of 14
th during the last edition of the Fortune 500. Rivals Anthem and Aetna finished at 33
rd and 46
th, respectively.
For mutual life and health insurance, New York Life insurance ranked the highest among other insurers in the same category. On the other hand, MetLife dominated the stock life and health insurance list, at 40
th place.
State Farm, at 35
th, was the top insurer for mutual property and casualty insurance. For stock property and casualty insurance, Berkshire Hathaway dominated the list once more.
