Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina announced April 5 that its chief operating officer has resigned.
The insurer of 4 million subscribers in North Carolina gave no reason as to why COO Alan Hughes resigned.
Hughes’ resignation comes after the insurer experienced severe technical and billing issues a few months ago, according to an article on wsoctv.com.
Early this year, nearly 25,000 customers reported issues with Blue Cross—issues such as the inability to enroll, being charged incorrect amounts for insurance, and the lack of insurance cards to serve as coverage proof. The situation went further south when customers found that they could not properly reach anyone in the insurer’s service center to address their specific issues.
The state Department of Insurance launched an investigation into the matter at the behest of unsatisfied customers.
Chief Financial Officer Gerald Petkau was tapped to serve as the firm’s new chief operating officer.
