The American Insurance Association (AIA) released a statement March 9 that The Hartford Chairman and CEO Christopher J. Swift was appointed as the Chairman of AIA’s Board of Directors. AIA made the announcement during its monthly meeting.

Swift succeeds XL Group plc CEO Michael S. McGavick for the position of Chairman of the Board.

“AIA thanks Mike McGavick for his outstanding stewardship over the past year and is thrilled to have Chris Swift serve as our next Chairman,” said AIA President and CEO Leigh Ann Pusey. Chris’s energy, commitment and proven leadership will be a tremendous asset to AIA and our diverse membership. We’re grateful to have his and The Hartford’s continued support, as well as the support of all our members, as we work to represent the property-casualty industry before all levels of government.”

“This is an exciting time for our industry and I am honored to serve as Chairman,” remarked Swift. “I look forward to working with the Board of Directors and AIA staff on important policy issues, such as the pace of technological change, cyber security risk and the changing regulatory environment, each of which have important consequences for consumers, our industry and the regulatory community.”

Swift joined The Hartford as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer in March 2010. He was then promoted to CEO in 2014.

He serves on the Insurance Information Institute board and is a member of the following: the Dean’s Advisory Board at the Villanova School of Business; the Business Council; The Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy; the Council on Foreign Relations; the Financial Services Roundtable and the International Insurance Society

Swift is a graduate of Marquette University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He is also a Certified Public Accountant.
