Christopher Iu has been named Acting Insurance Fraud Prosecutor by the New Jersey Attorney General’s office. He replaces Ron Chillemi, who left the position to return to private practice.

Iu joined the AG’s office in 2011 and was serving as deputy chief of staff until this appointment, which is effective immediately. Prior to joining the AG’s Office, he was an assistant prosecutor with Essex County, NJ.

Chillemi has joined the firm of Robins Kaplan as a partner in the New York City office.

“Ron has been a dedicated public servant of the highest quality, whose relentless efforts to combat fraud have been enormously effective,” said New Jersey Governor Chris Christie in a prepared statement. “The State of New Jersey has benefitted greatly from his talents as a prosecutor.”

As head of the Office of the Insurance Fraud Prosecutor for 5 years, Chillemi supervised a staff of 125 attorneys, detectives and analysts. At Robins Kaplan he will represent clients in health care as well as represent both insurers and insureds in insurance fraud cases. Robins Kaplan has more than 200 attorneys in offices across the US.

“Chris brings great energy and a wealth of investigative and prosecutorial experience to this position,” said Attorney General John J Hoffman.  “He has dedicated his career to prosecutorial public service. In addition, he has demonstrated his superior managerial skills by overseeing a number of important initiatives in the Office of the Attorney General.  I am confident that his knowledge and experience will make him a tremendous leader of the Office of the Insurance Fraud Prosecutor.”

In the Office of the Attorney General, Iu has worked with the Office of Insurance Fraud Prosecutor, Juvenile Justice commission, Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness, Division on Civil Rights, and on special projects with the Division of Criminal Justice and the Division of State Police.

“I am honored to be appointed to this position and look forward to leading the Office of the Insurance Fraud Prosecutor in aggressively investigating and prosecuting those who seek to defraud our insurance systems,” Iu said.

The Insurance Fraud Prosecutor oversees the investigation of all types of insurance fraud, and serves as the focal point for investigations of insurance and Medicaid fraud in New Jersey. The Insurance Fraud Prosecutor supervises a staff of 125 attorneys, investigators, and support personnel.
