As February comes to an end there is still time for a bit of marketing around heart health awareness month and the benefits of disability insurance for your clients.

Chubb’s Combined Insurance is urging consumers to consider buying disability insurance, to protect against an inability to work due to a sickness or injury.

The American Heart Association (AHA) estimated that an average hospital stay for a person with a heart condition cost $20,758 in 2012. But Combined Insurance noted that many people do not consider the related non-medical costs when evaluating their financial risk for a heart attack.

According to AHA, a person who suffers a heart attack could miss up to three months of work. This means the patient can lose as much as $11,574 in salary during that period, since a head of household’s median salary was $46,303 in 2014, based on the Census Bureau’s data.

A worker who suffers a heart attack without disability insurance would still also have to spend over $2,500 every month for food, housing, utilities and car ownership, according to 2013 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
